Is it Homeopathic, Or is it Holistic (Or is it Both)?
By Marnie McKnight-Favell, owner, Dragonfly Holistic, LLC
You have heard of homeopathy, and maybe you have even used homeopathic products to soothe your babies’ teething woes, or to help a bump or a bruise to heal quickly and with ease. How well do you know this alternative modality?
By now, you’ve probably become familiar with Arnica. Or one of the combination remedies designed for teething. When I speak with parents, I often hear that they have used one of these remedies for themselves or their children at the recommendation of a friend or loved one
But beyond that point, homeopathy feels like an arcane and confusing concept. With so many options for healing on the market, it can feel overwhelming to know how different approaches help, and how to select various remedies for what you need.
And on top of that, terms like “holistic” are typically interchanged with “homeopathic” unknowingly.
So first, let me clarify these terms.
Holistic: This refers to an overall approach to viewing both a situation as well as a person. In the healing model, holistic refers to viewing all parts as interconnected and related, in both wellness and illness or imbalance. The Merriam-Webster definitions are below.
Philosophy: characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.
Medicine: characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.
There are many modalities of healing work which are considered holistic: TCM, naturopathy, Ayurveda, chiropractic, osteopathy, and homeopathy, to name just several. So here you see that homeopathy falls under the broad umbrella of holistic therapeutics.
Homeopathy: Developed in the early 1800s by Samuel Hahnemann, this system of healing is based on Plato’s concepts of medicine. Hahnemann, a physician, understood symptoms to be the expression of illness or imbalance, and in his own studies, he discovered that some substances would create a healing response in an ill person where they would create a similar set of symptoms in a healthy person. The principle “like cures like” is a common term used in homeopathy. It is said that Hahnemann accidentally discovered a cure for malaria by poisoning himself with cinchona (quinine) and exhibited the symptoms of malaria while he was acutely poisoned. Subsequently, he treated malarial patients with cinchona and had great success. To this day, cinchona is utilized in many communities to treat malaria.
Homeopathy is a holistic system of healing. Hahnemann and his colleagues developed an approach to preparing substances for therapeutic benefit to address disease states as well as injuries. Currently, over 7700 homeopathic remedies have been developed and are used worldwide.
When someone refers to a homeopathic remedy, they are describing one of these remedies which have been prepared to promote healing for an individual based on these principles of like cures like. When someone refers to a holistic remedy, they are describing the broad terminology of looking at health and wellness from an all-systems perspective.
So, now that we’ve elaborated a bit on homeopathy and clarified the difference between the terms homeopathic and holistic (and where they can overlap), let’s look at the different ways that homeopathy can help you and your family to live an optimal, healthy life!
ACUTE AND CONSTITUTIONAL HOMEOPATHIC TREATMENT
Acute conditions are short-lived, have a greater intensity of symptoms than chronic (or constitutional) conditions, and the symptoms are rapidly progressive. Acute conditions typically require immediate or urgent attention to resolve.
Chronic conditions tend to develop over time, persist over the long term, and progress slowly with little change over a long period of time.
An acute injury or illness grabs your attention and needs immediate care. Homeopathy can shine in many of these situations. Homeopathic remedies have a successful track record in addressing colds, flu, croup, food poisoning, abscesses, sprains, bruises, and fractures. Homeopathy is also used for acute ear infections, tooth injuries, gastritis, burns, conjunctivitis, urinary tract infections, and so much more.
A chronic condition will have your attention, but will take less of your energies and often you either manage with the discomfort, or you have your condition monitored by a healthcare provider. Often, chronic conditions are treated palliatively - treatment is intended to minimize the discomfort of the symptoms, but there is very little offered in the way of support or health-building to manage chronic conditions.
When you are dealing with a chronic condition, it can occupy much of your energy, further compromising your immune system because it is tasked with managing the chronic imbalance in your system.
This is another area where homeopathy can come in handy. Often my clients who have chronic conditions come to see me because they feel so frustrated by the lack of progress or hope that they receive from their regular care providers. Perhaps they have been told that a chronic condition cannot be effectively treated, and that feels like a hopeless perspective.
When I sit with you and discuss your chronic condition - let’s use chronic UTIs as an example - you may feel surprised that I’ll also ask you whether you get headaches, or whether you run fevers when you are sick. You may feel even more surprised when I ask you about how you express your anger, or how you feel about thunderstorms or having company. How does this relate to having a urinary tract infection? But understanding all of this about you paints a picture of you, the unique individual you, and this tells a story about the different ways that you and the various parts of you express balance and imbalance. Do your UTIs have severe, angry seeming symptoms? Do you experience this in other parts of your life? Or do your UTIs express themselves with really sluggish urination, and do you feel sluggish in general? These are just two ways to view the many ways a UTI picture may show up in your life. When I understand every dimension of you, I can recommend a remedy which looks most like this picture you have painted, and ideally, this remedy can help all parts of you come into harmony. When all parts of you are in harmony, your responses to all stimuli improve. Your ability to recover from traumas or shock increases. Your body physically finds its pathways to self-healing.
My clients typically report improvement on all levels after they have been using homeopathy for constitutional care. My favorite followup visits are when a client changes gears, and starts looking at other areas of her life that she wants to improve, because the original condition which drove her into my office is no longer an issue for her, and now she feels empowered to source even deeper healing in her life and relationships. Does this intrigue you?
